More than 1,000 schools across England and Wales have either closed or shortened their operating hours as an intense heatwave grips the United Kingdom.
According to the BBC, temperatures in southern England are forecast to reach around 37 degrees Celsius, with conditions likely to feel even hotter due to humidity and other weather factors.
The extreme heat has forced at least 837 schools in England to close fully or partially, while many others have allowed parents to collect their children earlier than usual.
A red heat alert, the highest warning level issued by weather authorities, remains in effect across parts of England and Wales until Thursday night. The alert warns of potential loss of life, serious health impacts and significant disruption to transport services.
The warning area has since been expanded to cover more parts of southern England as temperatures continue to rise.
Meanwhile, a new amber heat alert has been issued for southern and eastern England on Saturday. Rail passengers have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel as high temperatures could affect transport networks.
Johnny, a construction worker in London, described the heat as “terrible” but said work must continue despite the challenging conditions.
Experts say climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and intense across Europe, increasing risks for vulnerable groups, including children, older people and those with underlying health conditions.
